Children and Young People's Service (CYPS)

Introduction to the Children and Young People's Service (CYPS)

CYPS support children and young people across Newcastle and Gateshead. This includes those living in difficult and challenging circumstances. They work with those aged 0 to 18 years who:

  • present with mental health difficulties
  • present with a learning disability

Services for children and young people with a learning disability are provided through collaboration between the Children and Young People's Services and Community Learning Disability Team.

Services for children and young people experiencing psychosis are provided through collaboration between Children and Young People's Services and the Early Intervention in Psychosis Team.

The support offered will depend on your needs.

It can include things like:

  • assessment and support for complex mental health issue
  • neurodevelopmental assessments
  • needs based and holistic assessments to find you the right support
  • a choice of therapies and psychological approaches
  • ADHD medication
  • a full support package for young people who are almost 18 years old and may need more support after they move into adult services

Is CYPS the right service for me?

There are certain treatments CYPS cannot offer. This means they are not the right service for everyone. Treatments they cannot offer include:

  • first line interventions for mental health. For first line interventions, go to Getting Help services - you can phone: 0303 123 1147, open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm
  • support for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) after your diagnosis. CYPS do not offer support for ASD after your diagnosis but we can signpost you to services that will
  • ADHD treatment without medicine - all their ADHD treatment plans involve the use of medicines
  • sleep or melatonin - they cannot take referrals for sleep or melatonin alone
  • referrals for a learning disability assessment or cognitive assessment

Referrals need to go through the Single Point of Access (SPA).
