From 1 December 2018 adoption services from Gateshead, Newcastle, Northumberland, North Tyneside and South Tyneside councils are provided by Adopt North East, the new regional adoption agency. Adopt North East brings together expert staff from each local authority, who can share their experience, and provide excellent adoption services that transform children’s and families’ lives for the better. Adopt North East will provide the following services across the five local authority areas:
- recruit and assess prospective adopters
- match prospective adopters with children in need of adoption
- support after children move to their adoptive family and after the adoption order
- support and advice to all affected by adoption
- contact arrangements between adopted children and birth families
- step parent adoption
- inter-country adoption
