Young Carers

A young carer is someone under 18 who helps to look after someone because they are ill or have a disability.

Most young people help at home but young carers do more than their friends.

Their family members rely on their help to do the things that they find difficult or can’t do at all.

A young carer might have to help with things like:

  • Cooking
  • Shopping
  • Helping someone out of bed
  • Helping someone wash
  • Helping give medicine
  • Taking brothers or sisters to school

A young carer can get help from the Caregivers Connected Gateshead service.

Caregivers Connected Gateshead is run by Carers Federation and is free to access.

Caregivers Connected Gateshead can help you by:

  • Finding out what help you need
  • Organising fun activities and days out
  • Helping you with school
  • Helping you plan for getting older

You can contact them on the phone, text/whatsapp, email or in person:
