Independent Travel Training is about giving young people the skills and confidence to travel safely on public transport, expanding their knowledge of road safety and how to plan journeys. This usually starts when young people reach Year 8 or 9 in school. Travel Training can open up lots of new opportunities for young people, making them less reliant upon others, supporting friendships and will help them to explore opportunities for college, training and employment in the future.
This film was co-produced by Gateshead Council’s SEND Involvement Worker and the Independent Travel Team. It shows some success stories of our Gateshead children and young people, and why schools strongly support the model.
