Gateshead Access to Employment Service (GATES) serves to support people with disabilities to gain and maintain paid employment in the local community.
GATES not only provides a seamless pathway from education to work for young adults with disabilities, but, effectively maintains people in their jobs by constantly reviewing their progress, having excellent relations with local companies. The service aims to raise disability friendly awareness in the employment community, demonstrating the benefits that people with disabilities bring to the workplace and to enable and enhance people’s independence.
GATES has a leading reputation for supported employment, gaining paid employment for 46 people with disabilities in the last 4 years. The service has received national accolades for its outstanding work winning awards at the 2016 British Association for Supported Employment (BASE) awards and the 2017 National Learning Disabilities and Autism awards.
Eligibility criteria:
Gateshead residents over 18 years old, who have a learning disability, physical disability, autism and / or a mental health condition. The individual must be in receipt of an adult social care assessment, meeting two parts of the Care Act. Referrals must be made through Gateshead Council’s Adult Social Care service.
